The Coal Workers (Les Déchargeurs de charbon), painted by Claude Monet in 1875 shows lines of laborers balancing along narrow gangplanks as they carry baskets of coal from moored barges up to the smoky quay of the Seine at Asnières. The great iron arch of the road bridge frames the scene from above, its dark span echoing the rhythmic silhouettes of the workers below. A rare industrial subject in Monet’s career, the canvas trades his usual gardens and rivers of leisure for the gritty working suburbs of Paris, rendered in somber grays, olives and earth tones.
