The Cliffs near Dieppe (Falaises près de Dieppe), painted by Claude Monet in 1897 shows the chalk headlands of the Normandy coast sweeping down to a deep violet blue sea under a hazy pastel sky. Flowering grasses drape the clifftop in shimmering strokes of lavender, rose and soft green, while pale outcrops of white rock catch the last warm light along the shoreline. The canvas belongs to the series Monet painted on his return to Pourville and Dieppe in 1896 and 1897, when he revisited the motifs of his youth in the softened, dreamlike palette of his late career.
