The Cliff, Étretat, Sunset (Étretat, soleil couchant), painted by Claude Monet in 1882 and 1883 captures the monumental Porte d’Aval arch and the slender Aiguille needle rising from a shimmering sea as an orange sun sinks toward the horizon. Monet made repeated painting campaigns on this stretch of the Normandy coast in the 1880s, drawn to a motif already made famous by Gustave Courbet, and worked directly on the beach to catch the cliffs in changing light. Here water and sky dissolve into pale golds and cool teal blues, the low sun laying a glittering track across the Channel in one of his most beloved Étretat canvases.
