The Church at Varengeville, against the Sunlight (L’Église de Varengeville, à contre-jour), painted by Claude Monet in 1882 sets the small clifftop church of Varengeville against a glowing evening sky, its silhouette rising beyond a gorse-covered ravine and a pair of wind-bent pines. Monet worked along this quiet stretch of the Normandy coast near Dieppe throughout 1882, climbing the cliff paths to frame the ancient church from below with the Channel gleaming to the right. The backlit composition, all violet shadow and warm citron light, is among his most poetic Varengeville canvases and now belongs to the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham.
