The Chasse-Marée at Anchor (Chasse-marée à l’ancre, près de Rouen), painted by Claude Monet around 1872 shows a dark-hulled coastal fishing lugger riding motionless on the glassy Seine near Rouen, its slender masts and rigging mirrored in the pale water. A screen of poplars lines the far bank while other masted vessels gather by the quay at right, all bathed in a soft silvery light. Painted in the early 1870s as Monet explored the river traffic of the Seine, the canvas shows his growing mastery of calm water, reflection and atmosphere in the years just before Impressionism was named.
