The Castle of Dolceacqua, painted by Claude Monet in 1884, captures the ruined medieval castle of the Doria family rising above the hillside village of Dolceacqua on the Italian Riviera, its ancient stone arch bridge crossing the Nervia River in the foreground. Monet traveled to the region in early 1884, in part following an earlier visit there with Renoir, and was captivated by the dramatic silhouette of the fortress against the rocky terrain. The loose, sunlit brushwork dissolves the architecture into warm, broken color, exemplifying Monet's Impressionist treatment of Mediterranean light.
