The Cart, Snow-Covered Road at Honfleur (La Charrette. Route sous la neige à Honfleur), painted by Claude Monet around 1867 follows a lone horse-drawn cart trundling along a rutted, icy road past thatched farmhouses buried under thick snow near the Saint-Siméon farm. Beneath a heavy pewter sky, Monet builds the scene from muted whites, grays and earthy browns, letting the dark silhouette of the cart anchor the hushed Normandy landscape. One of his earliest snow effects, the canvas announces the fascination with winter light that he would pursue for the rest of his career.
