The Bridge at Courbevoie, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887 depicts a quiet double-arched road bridge spanning the Seine at Courbevoie, a suburb northwest of Paris, its stone piers and pale reflections rendered in the short, comma-like strokes Van Gogh adapted from Georges Seurat’s pointillism. A small rowing boat carrying several figures drifts across the foreground water, lending a note of everyday leisure to the tranquil riverside view. The canvas belongs to a series of roughly thirty views Van Gogh painted along the Seine at Asnières, Clichy, and Courbevoie during the spring and summer of 1887, a period in which his palette and brushwork evolved rapidly under the influence of the Parisian avant-garde.
