The Bridge at Argenteuil (Le Pont d’Argenteuil), painted by Claude Monet in 1874 shows pleasure sailboats moored on the glittering Seine, their slender masts rising against a sky of drifting white clouds while the arched road bridge spans the river at right. Monet renders the water with broken strokes of blue, green and silver, catching the reflections of hulls, trees and stone piers. Created during his celebrated Argenteuil period, the same year as the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris, it stands among the defining images of Impressionism’s fascination with modern leisure and light.
