The Bodmer Oak, Fontainebleau Forest (Un chêne au Bas-Bréau, le Bodmer), painted by Claude Monet in 1865 celebrates a single monumental oak spreading its canopy over a sunlit clearing in the Forest of Fontainebleau. Beneath the dense green foliage, flecks of golden light scatter across the russet forest floor, while slender saplings and cool woodland shadow frame the great trunk at the center. The young Monet painted this famous tree, named after the Swiss artist Karl Bodmer, while working near Barbizon, testing the plein-air observation that would soon carry him toward Impressionism.
