Choose options
The Boat at Giverny (En norvégienne), painted by Claude Monet around 1887 shows three young women in pale summer dresses fishing quietly from a Norwegian-style rowboat on the dark, mirror-still water near Giverny. The models are Monet’s stepdaughters, the Hoschedé sisters, whose white and mauve figures and straw hats glow against deep green reflections of the overhanging bank. Now in the Musée d’Orsay, the canvas belongs to Monet’s late 1880s experiments with figures on water, where portraiture dissolves into atmosphere and reflection.
