The Blue House at Zaandam (La Maison bleue à Zaandam), painted by Claude Monet in 1871 depicts a vivid periwinkle-blue timber house with a red tiled roof, its long blue fence running beside a quiet village lane where small figures pause beneath young green trees. Monet painted it during his four-month stay in the Dutch town of Zaandam, where he had settled with his family after leaving London in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War. The roughly two dozen canvases he produced there, charmed by the painted wooden houses and watery light of Holland, mark an important step toward the full Impressionist style he would unveil in the 1870s.
