Rendered in the thick, rhythmic strokes of ochre, rust-red, and green that define his Saint-Rémy period, the modest garden seat becomes a site of quiet refuge, one of several intimate close-up studies Van Gogh made of the asylum grounds during his convalescence in the autumn of 1889.
