The Bay of Naples, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881, sweeps across the famous harbor toward Vesuvius rising in the haze beyond, its plume of smoke drifting into a luminous sky. Along the curving promenade Renoir fills the foreground with the bustle of Neapolitan daily life, fishing boats at anchor, carts and donkeys, strolling figures, rendered in rapid, broken brushwork and a soft, silvery palette of blues and creams. Painted during his winter 1881 sojourn in Italy, the work captures Renoir absorbing the lessons of the Italian masters and the Mediterranean light, a formative encounter that reshaped his art toward the more classical, sculpted manner of the years that followed.
