The Bathers, c.1918–19 – Pierre-Auguste Renoir Wall Art | Late Impressionist Nude Canvas Print
Choose options
Painted between 1918 and 1919 in the final months of Renoir's life, The Bathers (Les Baigneuses) presents two monumental nudes reclining in a sun-drenched landscape, their full forms swelling against rich Mediterranean foliage. The composition unfolds in coral rose, golden ochre, and warm emerald tones, animated by the saturated, sculptural brushwork Renoir achieved at Les Collettes despite the rheumatism that had crippled his hands. He worked on this great late canvas with assistants helping to position his brushes, conceiving it as a culminating Arcadian vision in the tradition of Titian and Rubens. The work hangs today at the Musée d'Orsay and stands as the testamentary masterpiece of Renoir's last bather subjects.
