The Bathers, 1887 – Pierre-Auguste Renoir Wall Art | Classical Impressionist Canvas Print
Choose options
Completed in 1887 after years of preparatory drawings, The Bathers (Les Grandes Baigneuses) marks the culmination of Renoir's classicizing "sour period," in which three nude figures recline in a sunlit landscape with sculptural clarity. The composition unfolds in luminous pink, ivory, fresh green, and silvery blue tones, animated by the smooth, linear contour Renoir adopted after his study of Raphael and Ingres. The painting belonged to the artist's collector Jacques-Émile Blanche and was envisioned as an ambitious statement piece marrying Impressionist color with Old Master form. The work hangs today at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and stands as a luminous testament to one of the most ambitious figural compositions of Renoir's career.
