The Banks of the Seine, Champrosay, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1876, looks across the river toward the gentle slopes of the Île-de-France south of Paris, tall grasses and reeds pressed close against the picture plane in the foreground. Renoir worked at Champrosay near the Forest of Sénart while visiting the novelist Alphonse Daudet, capturing the scene in rapid, broken brushwork of cool blues, fresh greens, and warm ivory. The painting dates from the height of Renoir's Impressionist landscape period and today hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
