The Banks of the Seine, Champrosay, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1876, looks out from a quiet stretch of riverbank south of Paris, where dense reeds and grasses meet the slow current of the Seine beneath a wide, cloud-filled sky. Renoir worked at Champrosay near the Forest of Sénart while visiting the novelist Alphonse Daudet, rendering the scene in rapid, broken brushwork of cool blues, vivid greens, and warm cream. The painting dates from the height of Renoir's Impressionist landscape period and today hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
