Painted in the high Impressionist 1870s, The Banks of the Seine, Champrosay (Les Bords de la Seine à Champrosay) looks out from a quiet stretch of riverbank south of Paris, where dense reeds and grasses meet the slow current of the Seine. The composition unfolds in cool blues, vivid greens, and warm cream tones, animated by the rapid, broken brushwork Renoir had refined alongside Monet and Sisley. Renoir worked at Champrosay near the Forest of Sénart while visiting his friend, the novelist Alphonse Daudet, who kept a country house in the village.
