The Banks of the Seine at Argenteuil (Bords de la Seine à Argenteuil), painted by Claude Monet in 1872 looks along a riverside towpath where two figures stroll beneath a row of tall poplars, their trunks screening the pale houses of the town beyond. White-sailed pleasure boats ride the softly rippling Seine at left, while a broad sky of drifting grey and silver clouds fills the upper half of the canvas. Painted soon after Monet settled in Argenteuil, the picture captures the riverside leisure of the boating town that would inspire many of his finest Impressionist views.
