The Artist’s Garden in Argenteuil (A Corner of the Garden with Dahlias), painted by Claude Monet in 1873 fills the foreground with a blazing bank of red, pink and golden dahlias, while a couple strolls beside trees and a white house with a steep slate roof rises against a breezy sky. Monet painted it in the garden of his rented home at Argenteuil, the Seine-side town where he settled in 1871 and turned domestic flower beds into serious subjects. Renoir depicted Monet at work before this very stand of dahlias the same summer, a vivid record of the friendly, open-air collaboration that shaped early Impressionism.
