The Alpilles, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, captures the limestone massif visible from the artist's window at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, its jagged blue-violet peaks animated by the same swirling, rhythmic brushwork that defines his late landscapes. Cultivated fields and small white farmhouses unfold in the valley below, the contrast between tranquil farmland and restless mountain silhouette capturing the emotional intensity of his final French years; the painting now hangs in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the Netherlands.
