Beyond the fence, sailboats and steamships cross the sparkling turquoise water off the resort town near Le Havre where Monet spent the summer of 1867 with his family. The elevated viewpoint and crisp bands of terrace, sea and sky reflect his admiration for Japanese prints, and the canvas is now a highlight of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
