Terrace of a Café on Montmartre, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1886, known also as La Guinguette, depicts a pergola-covered café terrace on the hill of Montmartre, its bare wintry trees and lattice trellises rendered in the muted, atmospheric palette van Gogh favored shortly after arriving in Paris. Figures stroll and sit among the empty tables and benches beneath strings of lanterns, the scene capturing the everyday sociability of Parisian café culture that so fascinated him during his first months in the city. Painted soon after his move from Antwerp, the work marks an early step toward the lighter palette and looser brushwork he would develop under the influence of the Impressionists.
