Tamaris, France, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir around 1885, looks out across the small Mediterranean village of Tamaris near Toulon, its terracotta rooftops and a tall palm tree framing the bay beyond. Rendered in warm ochre, silvery blue, and dusty rose tones with the more deliberate, classically structured brushwork of Renoir's mid-1880s “sour period,” the canvas reflects his repeated travels along the southern French coast, where he worked alongside Cézanne and absorbed the firmer drawing of the Italian masters he had studied on an earlier journey. The painting today belongs to the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: c.1885.
