Painted around 1885 during Renoir's encounters with the Provençal coast, Tamaris, France, c.1885 looks out across the small Mediterranean village of Tamaris near Toulon, the bay catching the afternoon light beyond the rooftops. The composition unfolds in warm ochre, silvery blue, and dusty rose tones, animated by the more deliberate, classically structured brushwork that marked Renoir's so-called "sour period." In the mid-1880s he traveled repeatedly along the southern coast, working alongside Cézanne and absorbing the firmer drawing of Italian masters seen on his earlier journey. The work stands as a luminous testament to Renoir's reorientation toward the South.
