Sunset on the Seine at Lavacourt, Winter Effect (Soleil couchant sur la Seine à Lavacourt, effet d’hiver), painted by Claude Monet in 1880 sets a glowing red sun low over the misty Seine, its fiery reflection trailing across the still, ice-cold water toward the viewer. Dark clumps of bushes frame the banks at left and right while the village of Lavacourt dissolves into a haze of violet and rose on the far shore. Painted during the bitter winter of 1879 to 1880 from Vetheuil, the picture is among the most atmospheric of the series Monet devoted to the freezing and thawing river.
