Sunset at Sea (Coucher de soleil sur la mer), painted by Claude Monet between 1865 and 1870 gathers a low bank of grey storm cloud over a wide, restless sea, its horizon broken only by the pale gold of a sinking sun. A scattering of small fishing boats rides the choppy grey water, their dark sails leaning before the wind as the last light streaks the waves. Working in a sombre, near monochrome key, the young Monet captures the raw weather and shifting light of the Normandy coast that shaped his earliest marine paintings.
