Two Cut Sunflowers, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, depicts a pair of sunflower heads cut from their stems and laid flat against a slate-blue ground, their heavy, drooping petals and seed-studded centres built up in thick, confident strokes of ochre and gold. Painted in Paris during the summer of 1887, it belongs to the first of Van Gogh’s two sunflower still-life series, made a full year before the celebrated vase paintings of Arles and already showing the bold, saturated colour that would define his mature style.

Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1887.
