Sun Setting over the Seine at Lavacourt, Winter Effect (Soleil couchant sur la Seine à Lavacourt, effet d'hiver), painted by Claude Monet in 1880 shows a pale golden sun sinking into a hazy winter sky above the Seine, its glow doubled in the still, cold water below. Bare trees line the riverbank at right while a small boat drifts near the reflection, the whole scene built from soft blues, greys, and gold. Monet painted the canvas during the harsh winter of 1879-80, when he studied the ice breaking up on the Seine near Vétheuil and submitted a related Lavacourt view to that year's Paris Salon.
