Storm off the Belle-Île Coast (Tempête, côtes de Belle-Île), painted by Claude Monet in 1886 hurls a heavy grey-green sea against the jagged black needles of rock that guard the wild Breton island. White foam boils around the pinnacles as the swell surges under a low, overcast sky, the whole surface worked in restless, churning strokes. Painted during Monet’s ten-week campaign on Belle-Île in the autumn of 1886, the canvas captures the raw power of the Atlantic that both battered and exhilarated him.
