Still Life with Peaches and Grapes, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881, gathers a mound of ripe peaches heaped in a Delft-style blue-and-white faience jardinière, with a bunch of purple and green grapes trailing beside it on a white tablecloth. Painted during a stay at his patron Paul Bérard's country house at Wargemont in Normandy, Renoir rendered the fruit with a velvety softness that contemporary critics likened to trompe l'oeil. The same jardinière reappears in several other still lifes from this Wargemont summer, part of a pair of contrasting compositions Renoir painted side by side.
