Still Life with Peaches, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881, piles ripe peaches high in a blue-and-white faience jardinière, with loose apples and pears scattered across the white tablecloth before it and an ornate red-and-gold tapestry filling the background. Painted at Wargemont, the country home of his patron Paul Bérard, Renoir gave the fruit a velvety, light-catching softness while letting the decorative tapestry behind add warmth and pattern to the composition. It is the companion piece to a second Wargemont still life that adds a cluster of grapes to the same jardinière, the two works painted in contrasting color harmonies during the same stay.
