Still Life with Lemons on a Plate, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, presents five lemons arranged on a white plate against a warmly cross-hatched brown background, painted while van Gogh was living in Paris and absorbing the bright palette of the Impressionists. The small canvas reveals his experiments with complementary color and confident, economical brushwork, the cool blue-green shadows set against the citrus glow of the fruit. It belongs to a series of still lifes van Gogh painted in his brother Theo’s Paris apartment during this transformative period, testing a lighter, more vibrant palette than he had used in the Netherlands.
