Still Life with Jar, Cup, and Apples, by Paul Cézanne arranges a glazed green stoneware jug and a small white porcelain cup painted with a floral sprig beside loose piles of yellow and red apples on a rumpled white cloth, set against a cool blue-gray backdrop. Cézanne painted this still life around 1877 while renting an apartment on the rue de l'Ouest in Paris, a period in which the French Post-Impressionist painter, a bridge between Impressionism and Cubism, began building his compositions from simplified, weighted masses of color rather than descriptive detail.
