Still Life with Bible (Stilleven met bijbel), 1885 by Vincent van Gogh
Choose options
Still Life with Bible, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1885 shows his father's large leather-bound Bible open on a table against a black background, with a small worn copy of Émile Zola's La Joie de Vivre resting beside it and a single burnt-out candle behind. Painted in Nuenen shortly after his father's death, the work sets the weight of inherited religious authority against Van Gogh's own modern reading, using stark tonal contrast between the pale pages and the surrounding darkness to charge a simple domestic object with deep personal meaning. It stands among the most autobiographically revealing still lifes of his entire Dutch period.

A note on this reproduction: this print renders in a darker, more muted tone with a near-black background overall. A brighter, warmer reproduction of this same painting is also available in our collection.
