Sugar Bowl and Red Peppers, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir around 1905, sets a blue-and-white porcelain sugar bowl beside a scatter of glossy red and green peppers on a softly draped white cloth. Renoir plays the cool ceramic whites and blues of the bowl against the warm crimson and ochre of the peppers, a chromatic contrast he favored in his later still lifes. Loose, feathered brushwork and an enveloping violet-grey light show the artist treating humble kitchen vegetables with the same tenderness he gave to portraits and bathers.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: c.1905.

A note on this reproduction: this print renders in deeper, richer red tones, with a darker and more saturated background. A brighter, more golden-orange reproduction of this same painting is also available in our collection.
