Still Life with a Joint of Meat (Le Quartier de viande), painted by Claude Monet around 1864 presents a raw side of beef resting on a white cloth atop a plain wooden table, its marbled crimson flesh glowing against a nearly black background beside a glazed earthenware pot and a few pale cloves of garlic. This is the young Monet working in the sober Realist manner of Chardin and his contemporary Manet, years before the bright palette of Impressionism emerged. The painting, now in the Musée d’Orsay, shows the future master honing his eye through the frank, unsentimental observation of humble kitchen fare.
