The scarlet tray and Asian porcelain reveal Monet’s early fascination with japonisme, the vogue for Japanese art that swept France and shaped his taste for decades. Painted during his settled Argenteuil years, it is a rare and refined domestic still life from a master better known for rivers and gardens.
