Still Life of Oranges and Lemons with Blue Gloves, painted by Vincent van Gogh in January 1889 at Arles, arranges a shallow basket of oranges and lemons on a table beside a pair of blue work gloves, set against a pale green background threaded with dark branches. The sharp complementary contrast between the warm citrus and the cool blue of the gloves shows Van Gogh applying the color theory he had studied so intently, here in a quieter, more intimate register than his larger Sunflowers or wheat field canvases. Now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, it remains one of the most luminous still lifes of his final year in Arles.
