Still Life with a Melon (Nature morte au melon), painted by Claude Monet in 1872 gathers a cut cantaloupe on a pewter platter, a mound of ripe peaches heaped in a fine porcelain bowl, and a cluster of grapes spilling onto a white linen cloth, all set against a warm ochre wall with a sepia-toned patterned porcelain plate propped behind. Painted during Monet’s prosperous Argenteuil years, the canvas shows the young Impressionist applying his fresh, broken brushwork to the venerable French still life tradition of Chardin. The juicy orange flesh of the melon and the blushing reds of the peaches make it one of the most sumptuous table pieces of his early career.
