The Steamboat Doris on Lake Placid, by William Henry Jackson captures the excursion steamer Doris gliding across the still waters of Lake Placid in New York's Adirondack Mountains, her wake rippling toward an empty dock in the foreground. William Henry Jackson (1843–1942), one of the most celebrated American photographers of the era, made this image around 1902 for the Detroit Publishing Company, whose souvenir views brought the American landscape to a national audience of leisure travelers.
