Stacks of Wheat, End of Summer (Meules, fin de l’été), painted by Claude Monet in 1891 centers on a great conical haystack standing in a mowed Giverny meadow, its thatched straw glowing warm gold against fresh green grass. A band of sunlit poplars and willows runs behind it, dissolving into the soft violet hills of the Seine valley under a pearly, hazy late summer sky. The canvas belongs to the famous Meules series Monet painted near his Giverny farmhouse in 1890 and 1891, now in the Art Institute of Chicago, whose exhibition at Durand-Ruel made the series an instant sensation.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: c. 1891.
