Stack of Wheat, Snow Effect, Overcast Day (Meule, effet de neige, temps couvert), painted by Claude Monet in 1890-91 shows a single russet wheatstack standing at the left of a snow-covered field at Giverny, while a pale veiled sun glows through the overcast sky above distant violet hills and farm buildings. It is one of the roughly twenty five canvases of Monet’s Wheatstacks series, in which he returned to the same motif day after day to capture the envelope of light and atmosphere around it. The painting, now in the Art Institute of Chicago, distills a hushed winter stillness that made the 1891 series exhibition a landmark of Impressionism.
