Stack of Wheat (Meule), painted by Claude Monet in 1890-91 sets a lone conical wheatstack, its thatch glowing russet and violet, on a frost-silvered field outside the artist’s farmhouse at Giverny, beneath a band of intense cobalt hills and a pale pink winter sky. It belongs to the celebrated Wheatstacks series of roughly twenty five canvases in which Monet tracked the same humble motif through shifting light, weather and season. Fifteen of these paintings, shown together at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in 1891, became the sensation that secured his fame, and this canvas now hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago.
