Springtime (Le Printemps), painted by Claude Monet in 1872 shows Monet’s young wife Camille seated on the grass in a pale gown and wide straw hat, absorbed in a book beneath an overhanging canopy of lilac branches. Dappled sunlight filters through the leaves and scatters small white daisies across the lawn, and Monet’s broken, spontaneous brushwork favors the flicker of light over a precise likeness of the sitter. Painted soon after the Monets settled at Argenteuil, the canvas belongs to a small group of intimate garden portraits of Camille that mark the artist’s shift toward the loose, light-driven technique that would define Impressionism.
