Spring in Giverny (Printemps à Giverny), painted by Claude Monet in 1890 captures a flowering meadow at the edge of the Normandy village where the artist made his home, its grass scattered with white blossoms beneath a screen of slender budding trees. Through the pale spring foliage the white walls of a house appear against a soft gray-blue sky, the whole scene woven from richly varied touches of green, lavender, and gold. Painted seven years after Monet settled in Giverny, the canvas now hangs in the Clark Art Institute and reflects his deepening devotion to the countryside around his garden.
