Spring at Chatou, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir around 1872–75, looks out over a sun-warmed meadow at the edge of the Seine, with feathery trees and a soft horizon stretching beyond. The brushwork is loose and broken, the palette built on tender greens, pale ochres, and dusky blue, all of it gathered in the shimmering atmosphere that defined early Impressionism. Chatou, a riverside village just west of Paris, was a favorite gathering place for Renoir, Monet, and their circle in the 1870s, and inspired some of the movement's most luminous open-air studies. The picture stands as a quiet, lyrical example of Renoir at the threshold of his mature manner.
