Snowy Landscape (Paysage de Neige), painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in c. 1875, captures a hushed clearing in the Île-de-France countryside after a fresh snowfall: wind-bent, leafless trees lean in from the left while a cluster of pale village rooftops emerges through the branches on the right, the ground rendered in cool lavender-grey shadow and warm ochre passages rather than flat white. Renoir painted very few snow scenes, and this small, atmospheric study is an unusual and intimate entry in his landscape work of the mid-1870s. The loose, broken brushwork and close observation of colored light on snow are hallmarks of the Impressionist landscape practice he shared with Monet, Sisley, and Pissarro that same winter.
