Snow Sheds on the Central Pacific Railroad in the Sierra Nevada, by Joseph Becker depicts a Central Pacific train easing past mountain snow sheds as a work crew clears drifts along the line, framed by the towering, snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Becker (1841-1910), a staff artist for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, traveled west on one of the first transcontinental Pullman trains in 1869 and sketched the railroad's dramatic crossing of the mountains, publishing his work in the newspaper's pages the following year.
