Six-Coupled Locomotive Luggage Engine with Gray’s Patent Gear, Shepherd & Todd, 1843-44 by David Joy is a hand-coloured engineering elevation of an early British six-coupled steam locomotive, its boiler and frames washed in green, standing on a short length of rail. The title block names the makers as Messrs Shepherd & Todd, Leeds, and the sheet carries the stamp “Original Drawing” and the inscription “Made by me at Railway Foundry” with the dates 1843-4 and “2 Six-coupled ‘Gray’ gear Engines.” It is the work of David Joy (1825-1903), the English engineer later known for the Joy valve gear, who drew it in the drawing office of the Railway Foundry in Leeds, where Shepherd & Todd built locomotives fitted with John Gray’s patent valve gear; the archive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers catalogues this elevation as his work, dated February 1844.
