Sioux Encampment, c. 1832, by George Catlin depicts a cluster of Sioux tipis on the open plains along the upper Missouri River, buffalo hides staked out to dry beside them as a hunting party returns on horseback. Catlin, an American painter born in 1796, traveled the Missouri River frontier in the early 1830s to document the appearance and customs of the Plains tribes, producing hundreds of portraits and landscape studies now recognized as one of the most important visual records of that era.
